Inclusions Garden Comes to the Cafeteria

BasilwSignOct2014When our own garden basil was offered to students on the inaugural Pizza Friday October 3rd, it was well received! An estimated 40 to 50 percent of the pizza eaters opted for the fresh herb topping, and we expect that number to increase over the next few weeks. Hopefully the plants will keep up with the demand.

More local produce will appear in the cafeteria and the ASD site this Thursday, October 9th, when the Office of SchoolFood’s Garden to School Cafe program hosts a Fall harvest party. Roasted butternut squash with grilled onions and apples EggplantOct52014and a side of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant will be offered, and this special dish will feature food grown by ps 372 students! On Wednesday morning, a few preK & K students will harvest eggplants and tomatoesTomatocloseupOct52014 that will be prepared by Garden to Cafe chefs at a nearby school with a fully operational kitchen. (They’ll supplement the ingredients with green market fruit and veggies). PS 372 is eligible for this cool program because we have a Grow To Learn NYC school garden. Want to get involved with the garden committee? Come to one of our regular 8:30am Friday meetings at the corner of Denton and 1st streets (in the garden) and/or join the google group to get in the loop. We’re getting ready to plant garlic, plant cover crops and plan for Spring –and we could use your input!  –Denise Maher
