Kindergarten Students learn about Balance and Motion

Ms. Karen’s Kindergarten Science classes are studying Balance and Motion. Photos here show our first six lessons on center of gravity and balance. The teaching points are listed at the end. Students took their mobiles home to further explore how balance is stabilized by changing the center of gravity or adding small items to either side.  The Balance and Motion concepts since lesson #6 have explored motion through building block structures and landing zones for our marble runs, observing objects floating on water and painting with marbles.  Then the class made small canoes to take home. Pennies or other small weights will help keep the very bottom of the boats below the water’s surface, making their balance more stable.  Container covers are ideal for creating rafts to compare with the canoes.  Each student made a book of drawings and observations to take home as well. Moving things are fascinating, enjoy!
