A “before” shot, taken around 1045am on Saturday 11.7.
-
-
Planters as seen before everything gets pulled.
-
-
Strong root systems take time and effort to remove.
-
-
Sunflower roots are a pain but can be very good for contaminated soil. See Power of The Sunflower: http://inclusions.org/sunflower-roots/
-
-
Rebecca and Liza attack a stubborn weed tree growing alongside and within the fence.
-
-
It does not go gently.
-
-
Liza, holding the remnants of the weed, explains it is an ailanthus altissim, aka the Tree of Heaven; it’s the tree from Betty Smith’s novel “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn”
-
-
A few earth worms were kind enough to relocate.
-
-
Marie carts the sage planter from Denton Pl to the transplant the herbs into the new sensory garden bed.
-
-
Milo and Ella consult with Lila.
-
-
Salvaged sunflower seeds add up!
-
-
Severn and Kaspar take home bags and bags of yard waste to compost…in their Prius, of course.
-
-
Tree pits get in on the action, too–with new fencing and mulch. Ella + Jonny’s dad, John, will customize wooden posts for them.
-
-
Julie plants cover crop seeds that will help replenish the soil with nitrogen and other nutrients.
-
-
We moved some of the grasses and herbs in the corner to the teaching bed and into planters.
-
-
After shot…the fabric covers newly planted cover crops such as crimson clover, buckwheat and hairy vetch.
-
-
For 2016, the teaching bed will house many of the fragrant plants for the sensory garden.
